Hi everybody! I was glad to discover flickr is even easier to use than imageshack. Here I'm posting a few photos of my first awkward steps into dollmaking. I'm trying to figure out how a doll is made, what are the ways to render the features and also trying to understand a little bit of human anatomy... Too many things altogether, well... Sorry if the photos are what they are, and my workplace is a total mess! I didn' t make a blueprint... Actually I started one for another doll, but here I'm going mindlessly wild! I know it's not a good idea an I hope the "8 heads inside the whole body" rule will help me a bit. After encountering many difficulties and being discouraged by the crazy amount of asymmetry the face had I thought to restart, and try making things more scientific. Anyway I realized I was probably running away, to postpone the facing of the "enemy": after all it's my first try, I can't expect more than a learning experience from it. Moreover I have spent quite a number of after-dinners with this project and I couldn't accept abandoning this poor girl. She is looking at me with sort of a sad face, also my cockatoo parrot seemed to understand she is supposed to be part of a silent little lady. I'll try my best to get her finished and happy of herself lol As for now she is just a very unfinished head with a sketched neck + collarbone. I found fun how you can make pieces hollow with just a few aluminium foil balls! Oddly enough the head turned out being quite balanced: she can sit on the neck without falling. IMG_5521 by totam33clipse, on Flickr IMG_5518 by totam33clipse, on Flickr the head is about 6,5 / 7 cm tall, making the ideal body length about 52/56 cm as for now

Oh I think she looks very nice! A first try is always very brave and you are doing a great job! I look forward to seeing your work progress.

Thank you allurose! ^^
The more I keep studying the more I feel this might be like learning a language. every time you understand something new, you have the chance to see more new things you were missing. ><

It's so true! And you are right to continue because there will be so many parts to learn like casting and stringing. I'm trying to learn as much as I can and then I want to try too!

thank you allurose! ^^ I'm totally loving the process. the bad times are endless, but I'm deeply falling in love with the idea of building a doll! I decided it's time to draw at least a sketch of the whole doll, in order to understand clearly what I'm doing and put on paper a few things. I also want to have a look at the actual proportions, and total height of the final super sculpey model. the head and chest are so small, even if the expected size is 52 cm! this is giving me a headache I guess that one of the hardest things will be the joints. I also wonder if the wooden balls are really needed or not!

Hey this looks great! I can see why you couldn't put her aside- she already has a personality all of her own, which I think is hard to crack- so well done!

Grazie mille (thank you very much!) bibarina! ^^ I just started to figure out a shape for the belly, I may try to add a joint down there (what many call "underwear joint" if I recall right). It's an idea I have been wondering about lately: a joint designed around the hip bones. I'm curious to see if it can both offer aesthetics and mobility. But I fear there won't be any possible space left for springs! Well, I'll just try! ^^

crazy workplace, sorry for the looks! IMG_5723 by totam33clipse, on Flickr after a bake and little adjustments to the hips part IMG_5727 by totam33clipse, on Flickr a put another shot of the face because I like how the light made her look here ^^ IMG_5734 by totam33clipse, on Flickr this face has another scale but I like how it looks here, even if proportions are strange. Well at least she knew how it feels to have a chest and a belly, so hopefully in her sleep she won't be envious of her sister =) IMG_5761 by totam33clipse, on Flickr IMG_5762 by totam33clipse, on Flickr IMG_5750 by totam33clipse, on Flickr IMG_5756 by totam33clipse, on Flickr I'm to the point that I feel happy to see just a bunch of rough shaped clay put together to mimic a body! XD I will try my best to adjust and define the parts (I know I will need a lot of time and effort, as my eyes are slow to notice flaws). I'm really enjoying the time I'm spending with this project. I 've tried drawing and painting before, but I never felt like this: I'm not feeling like I should have control over the process, I feel I have to create the conditions for the process to take place, as for gardening and bread rising. I wonder that if I keep caring of them, these girls will slowly tell me who they are, and that I could never force anything from them.

I am excited to see this girl finished as well as the sleeping head one and I love your process description! You are courageous and I hope you continue to allow this creative process to evolve into a finished doll because so far I thinks she is lovely .

thank you for the kind words and cheer up lhachwen! ^^ every step I attempt in the process the more I realize how complex must be putting the thing together, in all of its parts. sculpting, managing to find smart ideas about the joint system, tune it all, mold making... and this would be just the start. one may guess that also building a horrible doll must be an extremely difficult task, very time consuming. the result can turn out to be not pretty and still being well made, of course there is the scenario where the doll is not pretty and also badly constructed and/or designed. I think the scariest situation is a too fragile beautiful doll mindlessly designed so that she can't pose decently. ...a zen mind is needed here! p.s. 2 funny stories about my quest: 1. everyday I tend to concentrate on a particular body part and when I see a pretty girl with the kind of look I'm going for, I think "omg my doll needs that too!" 2. since I started the head I kept removing material from it. I wonder if she will eventually become too small! XD
