I kept working on my project when I had the chance and had a few bad times too. Often parts had scarily fallen from my hands... And I was very lucky so far. Anyway... yesterday I happened to literally crash the hips =( I was so glad a liquid sculpey bottle was already on the way to my home, so I was able to fix the piece today! I really don't know what's the matter with my hands lately >< She looks pretty different from what she used to look before, but I think she has a gentler face now. I started her right arm and adjusted a bit the proportions of the body I sketched so far. Besides the hip joint I couldn't stop myself to try a shoulder/scapulae joint as well. I will probably get into many issues with aesthetics and mechanics and regret, but my original "dream idea" comprehended such a joint system =) I can always simplify the body later! I have noticed it is way easier to adjust everything after you make the body somewhat posable. Right now I want to see the full legged body and I think I will start knees and shins as soon as possible ^^

Thank you allurose and bibarina, your appreciation cheers me up! =) I think I have come with a name for my girl already: I will call her "Lucia". Besides it's a name I like a lot, there's a little story behind my choice. It's quite a particular time in my life, many things have changed: I had to give up on some of my closest friendships, accepting those relationships were unilateral. I felt like I wasn't living my life anymore, and I simply was a walk-on actor in the life of other people: and it wasn't my intention, it was what others were expecting from me. When I realized it I couldn't accept the situation anymore, and so I ended up losing both what I considered my brothers and my music band. It was a very sad decision I absolutely had to make, and so here I am. Being somewhat lonely I had much time for me, and so I focused more on my doll project. I took the habit of going to my grandmother's home to work on my doll: nobody lives there anymore, she passed away this year but I don't feel lonely at all, there =) I didn't remember you can have a full and meaningful life even when you're alone: that apartment if full of my childhood memories, and I love staying there for hours listening to music, baking clay and reading books ^^ "Lucia" is my grandma's name, and also the name of my first teenage love... Now that I had chosen such an important name I'm even more motivated to sculpt her the best I can =)
p.s. I forgot to mention I also had a very beautiful dream this month: I was at my grandma's home, she was there, she was happy and loved to idea to make a doll. She also wanted to help with clothing! I know it was just a dream, but I like to consider this type of dream like a meeting.

I think it's wonderful that you were 'visited' by your Grandmother in your dream- I have had similar experiences in dreams too and they have always remained with me. Being alone is not the same as being lonely- you can feel most lonely when surrounded by people. Enjoy your time in your Grandmother's house- it is precious!

She has a bit of an ethnic look, perhaps because she is not yet painted. It's so interesting to hear your emotions and thoughts as you bring this clay to life.

Hello everybody! Besides not having much time for my project lately, I have been trying new approaches. I remade the joints for the legs with ALMOST clean ball shape, I have been starting to figure out how the knee works, and multiple times pieces had fallen from my hand to the floor... ouch! I'd call this the "stunt approach"! Of course a broken sculpey part is not a real problem, but this makes me wonder about the hell it must be, working with porcelain... I MAYBE have found an idea for the scapular joint that might be working in the end. So while there are always a million issues to be addressed both in the looks and the mechanics, I guess this was a nice research time. I'm tempted to remake body parts applying the new knowledge I have obtained, but I'm pretty sure it's still the time to stick with what I've been doing so far. restarting would make the learning process slower, and the result might also be the same, and not cleaner! I hope my sculpey won't turn to junk after so many bakings! lol Have a good weekend!

IMG_6139 by totam33clipse, on Flickr IMG_6140 by totam33clipse, on Flickr a few shots for the new shoulder joint. I didn't try to shape it in a more natural way yet. I just started this... yesterday ^^ sorry if the pics are not clear, the general idea is giving the shoulders the possibility to move up and down, and back and forth at the same time. Wow you have made a lot of progress! I like your shoulder joint. It provides lots of mobility and doesn't disrupt the look from the front hardly at all.
That knee looks wonderful! And good luck with the hips. I love it when dolls can hug their legs, it allows for a whole new array of body language.

It's amazing to watch her come alive. Do you have a vision of who she will be?

thank you so much allurose, bibarina, jilljackson! =) I can't wait to see the overall look she will have with both arms and legs. One thing I love of the process is that whenever you add something or work on a part you're actually doing more than you'd imagine. it's like cooking, where the taste is not the mere sum of the ingredients. also, one very important ingredient here is imagination, of course. my doll project reminds me the era were videogames were still simple, with good 3d animation but minimal graphics. what may not look like an arm to us, could ACTUALLY be an arm, for a doll: she will be happy to have that arm and surely will make good use of it. it's like playing with the child inside of us, a child who will eventually become an adult the day the doll will be complete. regarding the vision i have of her, I feel like I'm slowly cleaning a glass. it may sound funny, but I think of her as a girl who doesn't talk much (that's the funny part), yet she is very thoughtful and hearty. hard to understand if she's happy or sad, probably because she knows life isn't a clear and straight path. she didn't always like what other people do, but also what she does. anyway this couldn't prevent her to make her own decisions. she takes her dolly life as an opportunity, not a purpose. she's strong and independent but this doesn't mean she can't be broken. she can be the mother and the daughter, the friend and the wife. the child and the woman. she realizes the importance of love but she can even live without a romance, love is everywhere. probably that's too many words and thoughts for a primitive dolly with just a leg, half an arm, no hands nor feet, but wait... after all there was a "Steadfast Tin Soldier" who fell in love with a paper ballerina once upon a time! =) If I'll ever be able to finish Lucia, I'd love to see her with a very very long hair and light blue colored eyes. I like pale complexion but I feel this might not be the look for her. maybe a darker shade of pale would work ^^ as well as black or dark brown hair. ...as you can read I have been playing a lot with child inside of me!

I think you are off to a very good start and you have a very good attitude about it. Your enjoying the process, and you are taking your time. It is like anything else, the more you do it the better you get at it!

I think you are off to a very good start and you have a very good attitude about it. Your enjoying the process, and you are taking your time. It is like anything else, the more you do it the better you get at it! Thank you lilithskyblue! I'm indeed loving the learning process, and I think previous experiences with other subjects are helping me very much. I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel, but I would never be happy trying to straightly and poorly imitate what other people did. It would be like being satisfied hugging the photo of somebody you love. no matter the result, I have a few ideas that I want to play with! ^^ Sometimes i asked myself "why nobody makes dolls with this feature?" It may be that everybody already saw this is not a good idea, but when something sounds nice inside your mind it surely deserves a try! And of course this is the reason that made decide to try building a doll. it simply sounded TOO nice, and since life is so short... it's always a good idea to start working for our dreams =) P.S. I'm quite excited because I want to try a design which adds a joint to the chest. I decided to try putting together a very small doll to see if this can work. This way I will also save on sculpey (gooood point!) and hopefully (I know this is fool's hope) work faster
