ok, first of all I have to say: no, I am not interested in doing book of porcelain dolls, I don't have the skills for that -but a thought came to my tiny head last night just before falling asleep, that wouldn't it be wonderful if somebody would do a book of all the great porcelain BJD doll artists that are introduced in this forum? Book like Marina has done, but not just focusing on one doll and on one artist. Book that would show us all the talent out there Yes, I am a book-lover . I love to read and look at books much more than looking computerscreen (I still don't understand how people can read digital books...) I don't remember the name of the system in english, but I believe the money could be rased from tiny investments from multible persons. Well, just a thought. You can bury this

I love the idea but what about copyrights as some artists are particularly wary of their products, photos, names ...being used. The author(s) would have to ask permission to use them. Legally, it could be really difficult to manage and a financial trap too. Does anybody on this forum has some international legal knowledge? Also what about profits, if any? Is there a market for such a book beyond the forum? How do you advertise the book?

That would definitely be cool! As for copyrights, I believe if only owner pics were included, it would probably be legal... Either that, or you'd have to try getting permission from all the artists.

I was thinking that the artist themselves would be ask to contribute to the book -telling about themselves and their insipiration art of course about their dolls... And giving their own photos to use for the book -it would be advertising their work . In my mind, the writer/maker of the book would of course get the profit. But as said earlier -this is just a wild thought that came in to my mind. So if anybody has the energy to do such book, he/she can do it anyway wants.

I would buy a book like that in a second! It's so hard to remember of all the artists out there! A book would be of great help, and a nice companion too! So you won't have to rely on forum threads, text files and papers easy to get lost!

Hi All,
Just general thoughts on the subject of a book...
I haven't been on the inside of putting together a book for about 10 years so these figures could be off, but creating ink printed books is expensive, if they are of good quality, especially if they are bound books (books bound together at the spine as opposed to a notebook style). If you want good quality paper with four color saturation, a decent size (so photos can be appreciated), hard cover, and all the bells & whistles for a really nice "coffee table" style book, you are looking in the neighborhood of $15,000. for a first run of about 1000 copies. The more books you print the less they cost per book.
The other way to do it is if you do your own page layout and seeing if you can get a company to do the job of putting it together. All of the other things mentioned above would still be required, but you could reduce the cost several thousand dollars. All of that would be if you could get great photos from the artists and companies and, of course, their permission to print them. (Most artists do like to see their work in print, if the quality is going to be good.) They normally don't mind being included in a book of something like : The Worlds most Beautiful Porcelain Fashion BJDs. Not all artists are capable of the types of photographs needed for a book of this type, so it would also require someone to create some spectacular photographs.
We have teachers on the site, so proof-reading should be available. It would take a committee and a way of raising up-front money, to actually get things started. But, it could be done.
Normally the printing company requires half their fee up front and the balance upon completion. The last time I had books printed the best prices were from Korea, but that may well have changed by now.
Again, just thoughts...

I would buy a book like this. Authors might want to look into doing a kickstarter.

Actually, I think you can have a nice glossy book printed at Lulu.com, and it wouldn't cost as much... Depends on how long the book is, and the size, of course, but they have a lot of options for hard cover, glossy paper books

Www.kickstarter.com is a community of people that work together to help get creative endeavours off the ground. It has been used for film, video, comics, novels and publishing and lots of other types of artistic projects. My sons have helped back web designers and comic book artists and I just recently sent money to a kickstarter project for the creation of a new fashion doll that is geared towards girls aged 9-12 that isn't overtly sexualized and has the proportion of a regular girl. It comes out at the beginning of next year and for my 75 dollars I will get one of the first batch of dolls.

I had a similar idea, only muuuch more simpler. Many artists have an account on Flickr, where they placed many beautiful photos of their dolls, and Flickr offers the possibility to print a photo book from photos in the photostream. However, this would be one book per one author. And it's not very expensive. I would like to have a few of these books, even from people who are not the authors of the dolls, but that makes photography so wonderful dolls from their collection. And incidentally, I must say that Svetlana Pchelnikova (the organizer of the International Doll Salon in Moscow and many other doll events as well as she made a Russian edition of the ED book by Marina Bychkova) already leads several book projects, among which is the "Men dolls" (dolls made by men-authors and as well male dolls), and "The finest world doll" (different dolls, not only bjd). The book was published in two languages, Russian and English (both in one book). Here's a link to the preview on Svetlana`s blog. The book presentation took place at the Doll Salon recently. Unfortunately, I do not know where and how this georgeous book can be bought, but the "Men dolls" book can be purchased here. I am so very much hope that "The finest world dolls" book also will be available soon. I have seen many doll authors pages of this book (on Facebook and Flickr and LifeJournal..), but the whole book completely - it's a dream! But, in any case - this book is about all kinds of dolls. The book which is only about porcelain ball jointed dolls does not exist (to my knowledge, of course), yet .

I read about it but so long ago I had completely forgotten about it.
