Hello! As someone who currently only has resin in her collection I wanted to ask about the differences between porcelain and resin.
Do they feel different? How is their posing different? Do they sound different? (When I first got a resin doll I was struck by how much noise they made!) Any other comparisons you can make....?
I understand that many porcelain dolls are different, just like resin, but I'm interested in any observations you might have!

They feel different for certain. Personally I think porcelain feels colder to the tough then resin, I think it transfers heat more easily then resin does. This also means a smaller doll will warm up in your hands faster <3 I really like the tooth porcelain has, but I geuss it's just like resin, as the amount of tooth depends on the type of finishing.
Posing is about the same as resin but my pocelain Vividdolls girl is strung much more tight as you really don't want any limbs flopping around as they might break if they collide. So they feel more stiff (I have my resins fairly loosely strung).
My porcelain girl is strung with elastic so she doesn't really make a sound, the porcelain on porcelain sound is similar to rubbing 2 cups toghether at the bottom, I don't mind it if she does make it because it's always soft (my own creations however are quite noisy but they are bigger and I suede them just partially)
Most important difference for me is that resins are more easy to customise, you can perfect them yourself while a porcelain has to be perfect (in your eyes) when you get her. It's very hard for me to fall in love with porcelains because of this, even though I love the material very much and actually prefer it over resin now.

I don't have any resin dolls anymore, but I used to. The porcelain definitely is colder to touch, unless you've been holding it for a while.
As for posing, I think the porcelain dolls pose a bit better - i think the porcelain, even though it is smooth, has a different texture to it, and it seems like the pieces kind of grip each other, which helps hold poses better. My resin dolls did not do that.
My porcelain girls don't make much sound, with the exception of the ones I got from Ana Salvador, they have metal springs in their joints, and it makes an odd metallic clinking sound when you move them! It's not a bad thing, just different. My other porcelain girls are strung with elastic,so they don't do that. When I move them, there is sometimes a slight scraping noise, that's about it.
I think porcelain is not as bad for health and environment as resin is, and it does not deteriorate over time like resin does. For those reasons I switched to buying porcelain dolls, and I will never buy a resin doll (or anything else made of resin) again.

Thank you both for your detailed replies. You both make very good points. Hasel, I agree with porcelain you do need to be picky as they lack the ability to be altered to your needs in term of face make-up blushing etc. I think it must also helps keep costs down! Snegurochka You make a good point about the environmental aspect of resin. I'm a student studying environmental policy so this is a big aspect in my decision making when making purchases. I am definitely sold on the porcelain. Now all I need is the perfect doll at the perfect price.... If only it were that simple!

Definitely resin is way more toxic when you sand it and does degrade over time, while porcelain is safe to eat off of! (of course don't breathe any of the dust if you are going to sand porcelain) So that's a huge plus. I still have quite a few resin dolls, but I wonder if I should sell them all off so I can get porcelain instead.

I've just found this thread ( slowcoach! ) Here is a photo of 2 dolls by Lidia Snul, my porcelain Mermaid and one of Lidia's resin dolls which I no longer own. The resin doll's body is the same mold as the porcelain doll. The difference is amazing - there really is no comparison.

I prefer porcelain to resin by far, although if I love an artists work, and it's only available in resin, it wouldn't stop me from purchasing it! It is true that resins have more scope for customising- however, I have made some slight moderations to my Angelika Balan doll with acrylic paints, as her original painting lacked depth in the eyes- still work in progress....just a small tweak here and there, so it can be done!

The difference is amazing - there really is no comparison. yes, it's true. No comparison! I had a lot of resin dolls. Alls has been sold. I think that resin is material for the mass market. No collection value anyway.. I don' want resin dolls in my collection. Only porcelain.

bibarina, I bought the resin doll simply because it was impossible to find a porcelain doll by Lidia, I loved the sculpt but felt there was something missing. When I had the opportunity to buy porcelain Mermaid from a friend I felt that all my dreams had come true at once! I have never dared to tweek an artist's work, but it's interesting to know it can be done.
solveig it's true porcelain is more beautiful than resin, but there are some stunning resin art dolls - Popovy dolls for example. I must admit that I favour porcelain and I have been selling many of my resin BJDs to fund my porcelain purchases!

I would have loved to purchase a porcelain, but the doll I fell in love with happened to be in resin, which was just as well, as if she had been in porcelain I wouldn't have been able to purchase her at the time. I'm so glad you found your mermaid eventually!
It is simple to tweak a porcelain doll if you want to. If you make any mistakes, or wish to remove what you have done, you won't damage the original paintwork or the porcelain. It's like adding makeup really and doesn't have to be permanent!

This is why I love porcelain dolls; you can just leave them in the sun, not worried about color changing into something not so desirable. image by Tanja, on Flickr

caracal So, so true! There is something reassuring about their ability to hold their colour through the passing of time and light

What a gorgeous photo Caracal! Yes, it's wonderful that porcelain can be left in light with no fear (other than being accidentally knocked over!!)

Bibarina, yes so true especially when having seven cats in the house! But with my own dolls I don't have to worry, because I really don't care if they break a doll or too . (one of our cats actually just today broke my plaster mold for hands...dropped in on the floor...well, just have to do another mold I guess). I would be super worried though if I had porcelain doll made by real artist -that doll would be locked in lantern etc, far far away from my cats paws
