Many of You may have noticed on my Flickr account, that I am trying to make a porcelain doll. The reason for trying to make my own doll is simple; I don't have the money to buy a porcelain doll of my choice . This has been my way of doing things for years and years; I don't have the money to buy it, so solution is to make it my own. Sometimes it works, other times not so much -but hey, at least I have experienced something new I have a background from a five year art school studies, so sculpting wasn't totally new to me -but it has been couple of decades ago, so.... I started to make my own doll about one and a half year ago -something like that- and I have started again and again and again.... never happy with the size or with the material I used etc. I shall include some photos from my way; First attempt. Hated this polymer clay so MUCH!!! (original sculpey , very soft stuff and therefore drove me nuts) and the size of this doll was going to be too small, so off it went. image by Tanja, on Flickr Made the second attempt bigger, but realized that why on earth am I doing the torso joint right under the boobs since I hate it.... so did the body again couple of times.... image by Tanja, on Flickr

image by Tanja, on Flickr This was the first porcelain doll I actually finished -well, not totally, this one is painted with acrylics and not with china paint. And it is strung with elastics. But again, was not happy with the body, so changed it once more: Wip by Tanja, on Flickr

Some of the mess involving doll making . And I am so happy with the SuperSculpey stuff -million times better than the OriginalSculpey!! image by Tanja, on Flickr Plastermold making was not fun, at all... but I knew I just had to do it. (and since I think I have to redesign some parts, I have to do more plaster molds soon ) ..panic... by Tanja, on Flickr I was able to buy a used kiln with very reasonable price and I didn't anymore have to use the kiln in a school , where all the other people were doing stuff from clay and the temperature was never right for my porcelain stuff. image by Tanja, on Flickr This doll is now actually assembled -not painted though, since I will not paint this doll at all, I am just experimenting how the joints actually work and how to string with springs and swivels. Shall post photos when I have time to take some and load them to computer. Not perfect and some joints maybe have to be done all over again -but at least a start. wip by Tanja, on Flickr

Thank You all so much for the positive comments <3 I have now done couple molds all over again and made hands smaller too. At the moment I am waiting parts to dry, so I can fire them and maybe finally I would have parts to paint with china paint. My friend who has a shop/boutique has already asked if I could make couple girls for that place . So excited about that project! Although, I can not make very bling bling clothes for those dolls, because that would not go with the athmosphere of the shop -so those girls will have very earthy tones. Oh, and I am already running out of light color porcelain slip! Need to find more! (the ceramicstuff-store near me does not have anymore slip in their shop -I hope they can get me some more though, or I need to order slip from other country )

Painting -had some difficulties since porcelain painting is a new thing to me.. Learning to paint by Tanja, on Flickr And I did finally get one girl painted and assembled! There are things I want to still change/remake and I need to do new face at some point, getting bored with this one. My girls by Tanja, on Flickr My girls by Tanja, on Flickr All and all, making porcelain dolls has been lots of fun and it has been a nice journey to learn new skills. I still have tons of stuff to learn and to be better in other, but maybe if I'll continue, and making doll after doll after doll...then maybe, just maybe, someday I could be happy with one doll (although knowing myself well enough I know that I am never happy with myself and with the stuff I make )
