I came across an auction listing buried on the net today. It's a doll from Alina Ivanova, (here's the listing: www.ebay.com/itm/Porcelain-BJD-by-Alina-Ivanova-/151646817240 I was staggered to see it sold for $20,000 USD! I had never heard of this artist until now (granted I've only been making discoveries relatively recently). I looked at her auction history and she had only sold a couple resin BJDs and a fairly cheap porcelain. Is this starting to be a regular occurrence in the PBJD artform? My porcelain doll teacher tells me that limited editions can be worth up to $30,000, but I don't think I really believed her. My goals as an artist was to get at least $1500 AUD per doll. My thoughts were to make an edition of 3, keep one for myself (because that's ultimately who I'm making them for) exhibit one in a gallery and sell one on ebay. I'm starting to wonder though if my perception of this market is wrong? I love making dolls, have been making dolls of some description for years now, but I never dreamed it could pull in these sorts of figures. I thought Marina was the only one achieving these sorts of heights, but I guess not lol! What are your thoughts? Are porcelain dolls starting to go on par with those folks who collect $70,000 cars? How very exciting for all the artists out there, to put your soul into a piece and actually get your hourly rate back

Well, if we're talking records Enchanted Doll's last eBay Cinderella has to win - $76,500(!), but there is a huge range within porcelain doll selling prices, and resale prices. I guess demand is what drives the sales! Whilst I love the look of Enchanted Dolls, short of the lottery winnings, I know they are out of my range... Artists work this market differently - but I've seen a mix of pre-orders, waiting lists and eBay listings in order to sell. I think that in order for the prices to hike that high - there are often investors or art collectors who start bidding in addition to the fans... so you need to be a big name to get to the car collector stage But it IS an interesting market. I'm interested to see what everyone else thinks...

Yes it does seem to vary a lot. You mentioned having a large fan base, but does Alina have that much of a following? Alina only had 4 different people bidding and it still got that high. Yet her previous pbjd sold for $3000 I'm guessing with only 1 bidder. I wonder if even new artists can make a bidding war if they happen to make something that everyone wants, without having a fanbase. Curiouser and curiouser

Sorry, the link was too close to my closing bracket, it messed the link up. I've fixed it if you want to have a look

This doll went to a FB friend of mine. She collects porcelain Art dolls, and owns another of Alina's dolls, plus she bought the last Cinderella ED.
Alina definitely has a strong following, and has actually been around for quite a long time. Even her first dolls commanded quite high prices- not this high though- I bid on one myself a couple of years ago, but it still went too high for my pocket lol!! She pays huge attention to detail and costuming and they have a very distinct style- there is no mistaking her work. Alina's dolls were also among the very first to use the extra thigh joint, and are very articulate in their posing abilities.
All it takes for a doll to sell this high, is to have more than one collector with the means to pay a high price, and are determined to make the purchase. You wouldn't even need a large fan base, just an exclusive two if it came down to it!!

Haha, so true Bibarina - all it takes is two people bidding and pushing each other's prices up! I guess that's the appeal of doing auctions ;P

I'M surprised a FB friend bought ED Cinderella Bibarina! for some reason i imagined the person who could afford her wouldn't be a 'ordinary person' haha but someone oh i don't know really wealthy and wouldn't bother with FB. Don't really know how to say what i want to properly i just can't imagine ever having that much spare cash to spend on something just for me....i sure wish i did though x

Thanks for the background info bibarina! Nice to hear something more about this artist. Like mum4x said, I thought it must've been a celebrity who bid on her lol! Auctions make me nervous because they don't stay available for very long.

I nearly died (and went to heaven) when she posted pictures of Cinderella on FB, I thought yippee! I still get to see her from time to time! I thought she would disappear into someone's private collection never to be seen again!

You never know what you are up against, and it's too easy to get carried away bidding higher than you can really afford in the heat of the moment. I would have loved one of Alina's dolls though, but I would never have won in that bidding war lol!!

It was Alina's pirate doll that made me look at porcelain dolls... I'd love one of hers but her porcelain dolls are out of my price range ($6000+). I have my eye out for a resin one but even they are $2000+ she said to me... maybe one day

Haha Bibarina, I'm trying to avoid a bidding war right now. I think it'd difficult because sometimes I want the artist to get the highest possible price for their doll, and other times I just feel heartbroken when others are bidding hahaha. The issue with OOAK dolls I guess!!
