That is so true in many art form; some have such creativity, but the quality is shitty and some are just absolutely great at making things, but lack all the creativity and imagination. Well, that's why we have designers and the makers in many fields . (Personally I would just love to design doll clothes and have someone else make them for me, but unfortunately financially can not be done in Finland. I know any real sewer would be so much better making the clothes than me, but the cost of makers in Finland is astronomical ) I too want to pay for quality, not just for something being original. And no fake things for me, I'd rather buy a H&M purse than fake LV purse .

Omg caracal can I just say your sewing is AMAZING, your designs and quality are some of the best I've ever seen - so shhh (and make more clothes for me to buy haha). But back on topic, I agree, I would rather buy something within budget than a fake. Also quality is so important, which is why I'm often attracted to porcelain, there seems to be a certain level of finesse in the painting which is more delicate than a lot of the resin I see (but exceptions of both sides of course), and of course the way that porcelain is made and painted means each is different in some way. I think there is still a very grey area between the inspiration/copy thing... and almost impossible to think of a way to set a boundary. Inspiration is they way we build on ideas and be creative, and we learn through copying when learning new skills, even languages...

I blame both buyers and sellers of recast dolls, and abhor the practice and am absolutely saddened by how prolific it has become- it is driving away some of our favorite doll artists.
A seller who recasts is stealing art- art theft is the most vile kind of theft.
The people who buy stolen art- nearly as bad as the thief himself. Yes, sometimes the buyer doesn't know, but I do think that if you are going to buy a bjd or art doll, you do have do do your due diligence and find out the reputation of the person who is selling to you.

I have bought all my dolls from the artist who made them. As an artist myself the concept of someone recasting a doll is wrong. I one day will attempt to make a porcelain doll. I have attempted polymer clay creations before. I have found that sometimes I need to work in a vacuum, a bubble, to foster my own style and ideas. That means not looking at other artists. Yet there is lots of coincidence in many fields. ( Calculus being developed by two Mathematicians at once) I have come across plenty of similar ideas and trends in the doll world and do believe ideas arise independently. I used to work as an ideas consultant and have seen lots of this. Yes people do borrow, are inspired by and copy other people, however it benefits everyone to strive, to make ideas their own. Their own take on a dress or an outfit. I think big companies will pander to what is popular and what will sell. Which in turn can come from what is surrounding us in our own culture. I like to keep a record of my own sources for myself. Why I want to make something. I know that lots of people are not informed. The beauty of a sculpt can carry a person away. Personally being very new to resins and nowhere to go really and there being an enormous amount of dolls out there, I think I will be sticking with porcelain. I did do a lot of reading about porcelains, but it involved real sherlock style hunting. I love being able to chat about stuff on a forum.

To clarify- there IS a difference in culpability between someone who buys from a Company or artist not knowing that the artist has done some underhanded and someone who buys a resin BJD on ebay for a very surprisingly low price from a buyer in China or from someone whose reputation is unknown.

With regard to buyers purchasing recasts- this can be done through total naivety. I know when I first came across ball jointed dolls a few years ago, I had no idea about anything, and certainly didn't know about doll re-casting and it wouldn't have occurred to me that it existed. It took a while for me to find my way to the various forums, and I could easily have bought one through sheer ignorance. I always research items online for the cheapest deals, and faced with a really good deal almost purchased a re-cast resin. It was only by chance that I came across a thread discussing them that I found out about re-casts and found my way to the legitimate site! In the meantime I had discovered porcelain dolls, and preferring them to resin, made my first purchase from the artist direct.

I can see how that could happen. I am more concerned though about the people who are already in the doll buying hobby, know all about recasts and intentionally do not do not do anything to learn more about the doll they are buying or the seller from who they are buying- because they don't wan't to know the truth.
