Hello!
I wanted to begin a thread to share my project process for my new doll. I am a senior at an art college in the USA. My major is animation, with a focus in 3D character animation. I hope to one day work at Walt Disney Animation Studios or PIXAR Animation Studios. At my school, when you become a senior you are expected to create a short film as your thesis.
My film is going to focus on an issue I am very passionate about in India. India is troubled by a darkness involving the gender of babies. Many baby girls are killed, sometimes before they are even born, because girls are seen as a "burden" to families. If a girl is allowed to be born, in southern India in particular, one thing that can happen to her is that she can become a Devadasi. These girls are raised to essentially be "women for hire," if you understand my meaning. They do this dirty work under the guise of religion so that they may provide money to their families. Girls are "dedicated" to the goddess Yellamma at the young ages of 11-13. I hope that my film can bring light to this topic, as well as the topic of infanticide as a whole. My teacher wants me to partner perhaps with Unicef to see if we can achieve some fundraising for the cause!
My character's name is Ananya. When we show our films at the end of the year, we have a large showcase of all the student work. I didn't want just my film on the screen, so I am wanting to make a display. I decided that making a ball jointed doll would be an excellent addition to my display piece! I hope that a nice piece of artwork will draw more viewers to my film, thus hopefully getting more eyes on my cause.
I am beginning my process by sharing my 3D model of my character, Ananya. This character was modeled very painstakingly using the software programs Maya and Zbrush. She is not yet completed, but I have been working on her for four months! I hope that being creative with real materials will give my artistic brain the reprieve I so desire.
Please note that her mouth is modeled open intentionally. When I "rig" her or put the internal skeleton inside, I need to be able to open and close the mouth! The doll will be sculpted with a closed mouth.
Thank you so much for viewing, and I hope that you follow my progress!
