This is my hand sculpted doll Egg. I sculpted the original (master) from earthenware clay and then I created plaster molds for each part. Once my molds were complete, I poured porcelain into them in order to create hollow castings. I have made 3 Eggs so far from my molds. I also made an elaborate peruke for her and I am in the process of sewing clothes for her. I revised this doll many times. At one point I felt like I could keep modifying and adjusting parts and making new molds indefinitely. Honestly, I still feel like I should continue experimenting with different variations on joints and the form of the body parts. But, I am torn because I want badly to finish this doll and make different heads/personalities. The question "when is an art work finished" remains unanswerable for me. Have you painted her yet? she looks wonderful - I like her knee joints a lot. So many steps in making a doll, I am always impressed with people who finish.

She is so beautiful, even unpainted. So because your master is in earthenware, do you string your master parts or wait until you have made the porcelain pieces? Edited to add: I love this doll on your flickr with the fancy blue wig. Gorgeous!

Thank you everyone! She has been tentatively painted. When I commit to a final painting it will be subtle and natural (i think)

nenethomas, I don't string the earthenware master because I create solid parts. I have to wait until the porcelain pieces come out of the kiln before I know if the parts will work together. I had to revise a couple of things and re-make some molds. It is a lot of work this way, but I don't mind because I enjoy the process a lot, it is therapeutic for me.
